Hi Nadine, it’s a pleasure to have you as a guest on Kipple Officina Libraria’s blog. In this interview we will talk about artistic photography. Would you like to start by telling us a little bit about you?
Likewise, it is a pleasure to be featured on your blog. I am half German half Gozitan. I was brought up in Gozo and left the islands to travel and work from a young age. Art has always been a big part of my life. I’ve always had a big imagination since I can remember and drew a lot as a child and played the piano for a while. Later, I painted and started photography and design. I moved back to Gozo around 3 years ago now and have been really enjoyed it.
What led you to embrace photography as an art form?
Having parents who are both musicians and photographers, I guess it was bound to integrate itself in me one way or another. It all started a couple of years ago, when my Dad gave me one of his old cameras to practice. From the first click I was hooked. The fact that one can never capture the same moment twice and make it your own really spoke to me. Since then, a camera has been surgically attached to my hands. I love the editing and post production too. Playing with lights and shadows, setting the mood and tone of the photograph.
Nature is one of the predominant themes in your work. What is your relationship with nature as a photographer?
I have always loved quieter places. Silence and beautiful terrains. I have lived and visited many different landscapes, but somehow have favoured the more natural areas. I guess I prefer them as it quiets down the mind.
Your work though is not limited only to nature subjects. In fact, you are quite an eclectic photographer, tackling a lot of different themes. From people and architecture to racing cars and motorcycles. What is it that you search or aim for when taking a picture?
Yes, I love experimenting, trying different techniques and testing myself. I am quite ambitious and driven and pushing myself is part of the fun, making for some interesting results. I have always loved shooting from a different perspective. Also my clients prefer that. I am into concept based photography, so the shoot can take any shape. Something very mysterious and exciting about that! I love showing the beauty in everything, maybe not in a way most people expect it, but that’s what art is in my opinion: art is meant to make you feel something. That’s what makes it memorable and genuine.
Sì, amo sperimentare, provando diverse tecniche e mettendo me stessa alla prova.
Which are three adjectives you would use to describe your photographs?
Tough one, as they all mean something different to me. I would say, impulsive, experimental and authentic.
Direi impulsive, sperimentali e autentiche.
You seem to give great importance to being authentic in your work. What do you mean exactly by that?
Sembri dare molta importanza all’autenticità nel tuo lavoro. Cosa intendi esattamente con questo?
Yes, I do. It is extremely important to me. Authenticity isn’t perfect, polished nor refined. I am still learning as a photographer everyday. But being authentic in my opinion means you’re in competition with no one, not even with yourself. Creativity isn’t compromised that way and it’s very freeing. All my photos were shot and edited in a way I imagined at that time. It’s amazing how my editing changes depending on what song I am listening to or how my life is going. I find it like almost painting on canvas. My style keeps changing but it’s still me. Sometimes the lighting is ‘not ideal’ or the subject isn’t in focus. Most people would throw those shots away. I love creating a whole new piece from a ‘faulty’ photograph. It has always appealed to me. Authenticity to me means you work using your mind and imagination and your heart to colour it in.
Imparo ancora cose nuove come fotografa ogni giorno.
Modern technologies like mobile phones and social media have increased the number of people using photography as a form of expression. In your opinion, what’s the difference between snapping a simple photograph and artistic photography?
We live in the 21st century and cameras have come a long way, including mobile phone lenses which have revolutionised the way photographs are taken forever. I think being a great photographer has nothing to do with the medium. Interesting, memorable work is produced by the artist and the relationship with whatever you shoot with and the integrity and daily work you put in, to up your game. The gear doesn’t take pictures, people do. I do not believe that any photograph is simple, but maybe that’s just me. I think it is great that most people have the ability to photograph what comes their way at the palm of their hands. I would encourage anyone to not be afraid to self-express themselves in whichever form they wish. Make your own rules and stick to what makes you happy. That being said, for me personally, I will always choose a camera over a mobile phone. It feels more real and authentic, a different tactility altogether. It has become an extension of my body.
